“GH” stars Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson recently took longtime viewers back to the beginning of one of Port Charles’ most infamous families. The duo revisited the 1981 arrival of Mikkos Cassadine, prompting fans to reminisce about the Ice Princess era, the original Cassadines and the storylines that helped shape “General Hospital” history. The throwback even had some viewers noticing surprising connections between Port Charles and another long-running soap. Read on to see how “General Hospital” fans reacted.
‘General Hospital’ Looks Back at the Beginning of the Cassadine Dynasty
Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson recently took to their Stone Cold and the Jackal social media pages to share another “On This Day in General Hospital History” post.
The duo looked back at a major moment from 1981, writing, “John Colicos made his first appearance as megalomaniacal Mikkos Cassadine.”
Mikkos’ arrival helped introduce viewers to the Cassadine dynasty that would become one of the most prominent families in “General Hospital” history.
The original Cassadine brothers introduced during this era included Mikkos, Victor and Tony Cassadine. Mikkos and his wife, Helena Cassadine, shared two sons, Stavros and Stefan Cassadine. Mikkos also fathered two daughters, Alexis Davis and the late Kristina Cassadine, with Kristin Bergman.
The Cassadine family tree became even more complicated through Helena, who had a son, Valentin Cassadine, with Mikkos’ brother Victor.
More than four decades after Mikkos’ debut, the Cassadine bloodline remains connected to several familiar Port Charles residents. Alexis remains on the canvas alongside her daughter Molly Lansing-Davis and grandchildren Danny Morgan and Scout Cain. Valentin and his daughter, Charlotte Cassadine, also carry on the Cassadine family’s complicated legacy.
Fans Miss the ‘Old Cassadines’ and Their Storylines
The 1981 throwback immediately had longtime viewers reminiscing about an earlier era of “General Hospital.”
One fan remembered watching Mikkos’ arrival and suggested the show’s current writers could learn something from revisiting those classic episodes.
“I remember this episode. If they wanna create a new WSB storyline, they need to take a look back at these episodes from the eighties,” the viewer commented.
Another fan apparently agreed that the classic storylines could provide some inspiration, writing, “Writers now should take notice.”
For some viewers, the throwback arrived at the perfect time because they had already been revisiting the Cassadines’ early days.
“They are replaying most of the Ice Princess episodes on YouTube. They just posted this episode today. It’s been great reliving the best storyline in GH history,” one fan shared.
Other longtime viewers were simply happy to revisit the memories.
“Great memories of GH’s episodes!” one fan commented.
Another admitted they missed the family and the drama they brought with them, writing, “The Cassadines. I miss these guys and their storylines.”
Of course, the Cassadines weren’t exactly known for being Port Charles’ warmest and most well-adjusted family.
“I kinda miss the old Cassadines, even if they were creepy!” one viewer joked.
Fans Spot Some Surprising ‘Days of Our Lives’ Connections
While many viewers focused on reminiscing about the Cassadines, one fan noticed a surprising connection between “General Hospital” and “Days of Our Lives.”
“Tony DiMera from Days of Our Lives was on General Hospital?” the viewer asked.
As longtime soap fans may remember, Thaao Penghlis originated the role of Victor Cassadine in 1981 during the Cassadine family’s early years in Port Charles. Penghlis later became well known to “Days of Our Lives” viewers for portraying Tony DiMera.
Interestingly, Victor isn’t the only major Cassadine character with ties to Salem.
One fan singled out Stefan Cassadine as particularly memorable, writing, “Stefan to me was the creepiest. Obsessed with Laura with the life-sized portrait of her in his house. Freak!”
Stefan was portrayed by Stephen Nichols from 1996 until 2003. However, before arriving in Port Charles as a member of the Cassadine family, Nichols had already become familiar to “Days of Our Lives” viewers as Steve “Patch” Johnson, a role he began playing in the mid-1980s.
From Mikkos’ arrival and the Ice Princess storyline to the generations of Cassadines who followed, the family has left an undeniable mark on “General Hospital.” Judging by the reaction to the 1981 throwback, plenty of longtime viewers still have a soft spot for Port Charles’ famously complicated and occasionally creepy Cassadine dynasty.
