If you can accept the almost completely absurd premise that a virus is causing most of the world’s population to de-evolve into bloodthirsty vampires, you’ll be quite impressed with everything else in Daybreakers. This isn’t a “fun” movie, nor is it “cool” — the Spierig Brothers take this apocalyptic situation stone-cold seriously, and it’s that sense of conviction and dedication to their story that makes the film all the more intense, tragic and exciting. The directors also take great care in showing us just how society would at least try to continue functioning under such circumstances — there’s a scary, dangerous new world here to discover, one made of imagination and passionate creativity, and you should at least take a peek.
